News - H5 avian flu virus identified in chicken, duck at 2nd location in Romania - Forbes.com

BUCHAREST (AFX) - The H5 avian flu virus has been identified in a duck and a chicken in Peripava, southeastern Romania, an official in the southeastern Tulcia department, Ioan Boieru, said.

'From today, we will begin the slaughter of some 1,500 poultry in Peripava,' he said. 'We are counting on the cooperation of poultry farmers, who will be compensated for this.'

Samples taken from the two birds were tested by laboratories in Bucharest, he added.

Peripava is the second location in Romania where avian flu has been discovered since September.

On Saturday, Health Minister Gheorghe Flutur announced the slaughter of 15,000 domestic poultry in the village of Scarlatesti in eastern Romania, after the discovery of the H5 virus in a turkey.
